My whole life has been spent on bikes. But buying myself a new e-bike was a game-changer.
I used to cycle all day long because I was so excited about my new ebike.
I wouldn’t get off of it. Anywhere I had to go, my bike would accompany me.
And not only me, but all of my closest friends also loved my bike and I would let them borrow it if they wanted to take a ride around the town or run some errand.
However, like every other thing in the world, there is only a limit to which something can function and go on without maintenance and so was the case with my bike.
It started showing symptoms of mild problems that I knew were not serious enough but they definitely did require my attention.
As I had not spent much time with ebikes before, I didn’t really know how to do proper maintenance of it on my own.
My list of bike repair habits:
I have owned the regular bikes for almost my entire life and ever since I grew up but having an ebike was kind of different.
I had to do my own study before diving into the maintenance part.
So, I dived into some research about bike repair and maintenance habits and made a list of all the best tips and tricks that I found useful for myself.
If you also are a new user of e-bikes and do not know how to repair them or how to do the easy maintenance, this list might also be of great help to you.
Keep your tire pressure monitored:
One of the basic rules of bike maintenance is to keep your tire pressure checked at all times.
Doesn’t matter if you’re a professional, sports or recreational rider, keeping your tire pressure well maintained will help you to keep your bike performance at the optimal level.
Mountain biking especially involves riding on uneven and rough surfaces and if the tire pressure is not optimal, not only can it affect the ride but the tires as well.
And worn-out tires will do no good to anybody.
Wash but don’t shower:
It is important to know while cleaning your bike that showering water is bad for your ebike.
While showering your bike with full pressured water coming from a hose is really helpful for your normal bikes, doing the same might not be such a good idea when it comes to ebikes.
This is because of the simple fact that e-bikes are electrically powered and are motor-driven.
Loose water might do more damage than good so it’s best to steer clear of direct water.
Instead, use cleaning wipes and wash clothes when cleaning your bike.
A little lubrication goes a long way:
It is said that a proper and well-lubricated bike goes a long way. Act on this routinely.
Lubricate the chains of your bike on a regular basis. Use the proper lubricating oil and not just any oil as the harmful chemicals in non-suitable oils/lubricants may cause corrosion to the substance.
However, make sure that you clean your chain first before applying any further oil or lubricant as it can all together make a bad mess.
Feed the battery like a baby:
The basis of n ebike is the battery-powered motor. The Pedelec system runs on the battery and this is exactly what runs your bike.
So, its safe to say that your battery is the central hub and functioning center of the ebike.
That makes it the most important component to be taken care of. Charge your battery every time you come home after a ride.

And try to maintain the battery levels at a minimum of seventy percent at all times as it is known to help keep the battery function at optimal levels at all times.
A clean bike is a happy bike:
Keeping your bike clean is included in the basic hygiene practice.
Keep the chains clean and free from unnecessary grease if you want them to keep away from squeaking.
The battery and motor should also be cleaned regularly with an appropriate dry cloth and cleaning stuff.
This will maintain a healthy breathable mechanism leading to a happier biking experience.
Make good use of the battery warranty:
Normally, all of our bikes come with good warranty packages and durations.
It is important to know the details of your warranty and the time duration for it.
This way, if something happens to the hardware or any other components of the bike you can easily get it repaired. Warranties are also offered for the motor and batteries of the ebikes.
If there is a malfunction with the ebike, learn about the details of whatever your company is offering for warranty and claim for it. Your bike will thank you in the long run.
Many people fail to take advantage of the warranty packages only because they don’t even know about the services being offered on a warranty.
Don’t make the same mistake. Be well informed and make good use of the warranty service.
Take cues from the bike controller:
Have you ever seen that little controller thing between your bike handlebars? Yes, they are the bike controllers and they are present there to help you know more about the bike.
They tell you how much assistance is the bike taking up from the electrical battery and how much your ebike is relying upon the motor.
They are basically just little computers with frequent software updates like any other smartphone.
So, keep an eye for any such updates that these mini-computers might need. After all, they are going to help you a lot in the long run (literally)!
Get some professional servicing:
A very important message that I want to convey to the readers is that no matter how much of an enthusiast you are about your bike and no matter how much you think you can take care of it, it is always a good idea to get professional servicing done.
This will ensure that your ebike is working at the best optimal performance and that all the parts are in their best shape.
Getting professional servicing for your bike is like getting routine medical checkups from the doctor.
It’s always good to be in the know-how.
When I made the list first, I wasn’t sure if this was going to help me in the long run or not.
But now I can confidently say that following these 8 bike repair habits has made my life so much easier.
I now always have a pattern in which I take care of my bike.
I always know which things to take care of, which components to check for, and which parts need professional help.
I cannot stress enough though, that getting professional help for your bike at regular intervals of six months or whenever you feel like your bike is in need of it has proved to be of so much help.
Read my list and tell me how did it help you! Also, if you have any other questions regarding bike repair and care tips do let me know. I would love to be of any help.
